How Dexcom and Abbott are going beyond diabetes
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 37 million people in the United States have diabetes. That is just over 11% of the total population.
A diabetic’s body does not produce enough insulin, or no insulin at all. Sick people need to check their blood sugar regularly. This is traditionally done with blood glucose meters, which diabetics use to prick their fingers to detect drops of blood. But in the last decade, technologies like continuous glucose monitoring have been on the rise.
Abbott And Dexcom are the two most dominant players in this field. Both companies recorded increased growth.
The technology is also being marketed by several health and wellness apps, as many companies see benefits for those who don’t have diabetes.
CNBC spoke to both Abbott and Dexcom about the technology in continuous glucose meters and how they anticipate its expansion.
