The 2023 Golden Globe Awards was a momentous night for so many stars. The ceremony, hosted by Emmy-winner Jerrod Carmichael, opened with Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a film category. Everything Everywhere All at Once star Ke Huy Quan took home the night’s first prize and gave an emotional speech about his Hollywood career. Angela Bassett then won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Black Panther, her second win following her win for What’s Love Got to Do With It in 1993 (and a first Golden Globe for the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Later, Tyler James Williams won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gregory in Abbott Elementary before the show took home Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy at the end of the night.
Other notable wins included that of Michelle Yeoh, who won Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Jennifer Coolidge took home another supporting actress win for her role in The White Lotus, after winning an Emmy for the same role in September 2022. Meanwhile, Ryan Murphy took home the special Carol Burnett Award and Eddie Murphy was honored with the Cecil B.DeMille award. “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “The Fabelmans” won the Best Picture Awards of the Night, Best Picture, Best Drama and Best Picture, Best Musical and Best Comedy, respectively.
Not everyone could win, so just being nominated is a huge accomplishment, and this year’s Globes honorees were stacked. The Banshees of Inisherin led with a whopping eight nominations, including Best Picture, Drama; Best Actor in a Drama; two nominations for Best Supporting Actor; and a best supporting actress nom. Close behind were “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Babylon,” which scored six and five nods, respectively. On the television side, “Abbott Elementary” took home five nominations, closely followed by “The Crown,” “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Pam & Tommy,” and “The White Lotus”, who scored all four points.
One of the biggest surprises was the love shown by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for Netflix’s “Wednesday,” which garnered a nomination for the series and one for Jenna Ortega. And Best Original Song might have been the most starred category, with contributions from Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. Meanwhile, Brendan Fraser, who said he would not attend the event if nominated, secured recognition for his work in The Whale.
