What travelers need to know about the shutdown, flight cuts and delays

The second day of government-imposed flight cuts took place at 40 of the busiest airports in the US on Saturday.

According to FlightAware, a tracking service, there were about 1,460 flight cancellations in the U.S. as of 7 p.m. Eastern Time. The reductions began early Friday after the Trump administration announced it would reduce air traffic at the busiest airports by 10 percent, setting off a race for airlines, airports and travelers to adapt.

Saturday’s number exceeded the 1,024 cancellations recorded by FlightAware on Friday, although Saturdays are generally quieter air travel days.

On Friday there was a decline of 4 percent in the affected markets. That share will continue to rise until it reaches 10 percent next Friday, the Transportation Department and the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The list of the 40 affected airports was published late Thursday evening. The Transportation Department said airlines could decide which flights they would cancel and that international flights did not have to be canceled.
