Reuters unveils ‘Dashed Dreams’ for China Evergrande’s flagship resort island

Reuters gave a glimpse of how the opening last year of the world’s largest man-made holiday island, developed by China Evergrande Group at a cost of nearly $13 billion, was the realization of the ambitions of founder Hui Ka Yan, who himself designed a blueprint for designed the project. Now Evergrande is in default to global bondholders, and officials in the city of Danzhou have ordered the demolition of 39 of the project’s towers — about 3,900 of the island’s 65,000 homes — over environmental and construction violations.
