Kaley Cuoco’s new comedic thriller series Based on a True Story delves deep into the world of true crime and the toilet. Adding to her growing list of on-screen investigations, Cuoco will direct Peacock’s new true-crime-inspired series about three people whose lives are turned upside down after an unexpected series of events forces them together – with scenes laced with literal toilet humor are (read : a mystery comedy – a lover’s dream come true).
For anyone invested in the absurdity and genre-specific irony of Netflix’s The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, Peacock’s new series is poised to plunge us into yet another eccentric mystery. According to the streaming platform, the show is about “a real estate agent, a plumber and a former tennis star whose lives unexpectedly collide, exposing America’s obsession with true crime, murder and the slowly closing toilet seat.” Not your typical thriller theme, but we’re intrigued.
“In the last decade, America has been gripped by a true crime phenomenon,” showrunner Craig Rosenberg said in a statement. “Podcasts, documentaries, fictional shows based on true stories – they dominate the culture. Killers became celebrities and celebrities became killers, which inspired me to create this show. failed to materialize and who saw the tidal wave of true crime as an opportunity to change their lives and save their marriages.”
The eight-episode series is set in Los Angeles, where the characters face questions of “fame, ambition, aspiration and murder.”
The series stars Kaley Cuoco as a married woman named Ava Bartlett, Chris Messina as Nathan and Tom Bateman as Matt. Other cast members include Priscilla Quintana, Liana Liberato, Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer, Alex Alomar Akpobome, Aisha Alfa, Annabelle Dexter-Jones and Li Jun Li.
While portions of Based on a True Story were reportedly influenced by true events, Peacock has not revealed any additional details about the series or the actual crime that inspired it.
Based on a True Story is being produced by Ozark stars Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan and Craig Rosenberg, who will also serve as showrunner through Aggregate Films. The series premieres exclusively on Peacock on June 8th.
